Patient and Public Involvement
Patient and Public Involvement
This module involves the establishment of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) activities to better reflect the perspectives of patients and members of the public. Awareness of the need for this form of dialog has been increasing in recent years. JSRM is advancing plans to promote interactive communication with patients and members of the public, with a view to utilizing their perspectives in clinical research protocols and other areas.
In the initial stages of research, JSRM will carry out hearings to better understand the views of patients and family members affected by diseases that are expected to be positively impacted by the practical implementation of regenerative medicine. The following methods will be used:
- Focus group interviews
- Questionnaire-based surveys
Based on the results of these efforts, JSRM will explore possibilities to ensure that regenerative medicine develops as an advanced medical science in keeping with the needs of society.
Not all treatments classified as regenerative medicine have been proven to be effective. JSRM plans to post patient education videos on the internet about aspects of the field that require further detailed explanation.

Event Details
The Japanese Society for Regenerative Medicine (President: Yoshiki Sawa, MD, PhD) will hold a Patient and Public Involvement event as part of the Project to Build Foundation for Promoting Clinical Research of Regenerative Medicine run by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED). Many believe that the involvement of patients and members of the public in clinical research in the field of regenerative medicine will become even more important in the future. Through these efforts, JSRM aims to create more effective knowledge-sharing to better reflect patients’ expectations and needs through dialog and consultations between patients and researchers. Part 1 of this event features speeches explaining the fundamentals of regenerative medicine and presentations from researchers studying specific diseases. In Part 2, researchers, patients, family members, and medical professionals will participate in group discussions for “Recent Information about Regenerative Medicine Research.”
